Bawdy Origins of "O Sacred Head, Now Wounded"

An organist played for me, "O Sacred Head Now Wounded," and she knew the original words: "I cried into my beer stein, my love has gone away." She said it was one of the most bawdy tunes she had ever heard, but Bach chose it because the congregation all knew it. How can people ever put down jazz, or any music that comes into the church through the people?
