I was interested recently to read the dedication to a grandson by Ralph W. Sockman, one of the great preachers of the last century who was pastor of Christ Church (Methodist) in New York City for nearly forty-five years. Sockman dedicated his How to Believe: The Questions that Challenge Man’s Faith Answered in Light of the Apostles’ Creed (Doubleday, 1953):

“To my grandson, Billy, in the hope that he will someday know what he believes as firmly as he now knows what he wants.”
